Last month I made the Strawberry Lemon Cake Bowls using a special pan from Good Cook but I also wanted to make something fun for the kids. After thinking about it, I decided the Bake-A-Bowl pan would be perfect for making little flower pot cakes so I picked up a boxed cake mix, gummy treats and found some Easter clearance flowers at Walmart for cake decorating. The longest part is just your cake baking in the pan. If you don’t have a bowl pan, you could make regular cupcakes and very carefully, scoop the centers out when they’re cooled.
You’ll need the following:
- Cake Mix (and needed ingredients on the back of cake box)
- Chocolate cookies (I chose stuffed ones but you don’t have to)
- Instant chocolate pudding
- Gummy Worms
- Flower kit
Mix up your cake according to the directions on the box.
Insert little tidbit here: My original plan was to get a regular cake mix and dye it… I know, I know… but when I got to Walmart, I saw the Red Velvet mix. Perfect! I wouldn’t have to worry about coloring it to kinda resemble a terracotta pot. And then I saw the Pillsbury brand where they make these small packages of cake mix and they’re pre-colored. Perfect for those rainbow cakes, I guess. That’s when the debate between red velvet and orange began. It took me so long to decide that the shelf stocker made a comment. eeks. Obviously, I went with the Red Velvet but really, you can do any color you want. đŸ™‚
Now here is a tip for using a regular cake mix in these kind of pans. Cake rises, especially in the center so you want to make sure your batter does not, and I repeat, does not go above the fill line. In fact, fill the pan to just under the fill line. Your batter will still rise on the center side of the pan but it won’t be as noticeable. I learned that one the hard way. Awkward looking pots, to say the least.
While the cakes are baking/cooling, make your instant pudding and then crush up your cookies. Once you’re done, get all your flower pot making supplies together and get ready to make some flower pots!
I choose the stuffed cookies because the white center kind of gives it the potting soil look once they’re all crushed. Crushing cookies is a fun way to take out any frustration too…maybe like when your cakes rise on one end way more than they rise all around. Yeah. Crushing cookies is good.
Spoon your set instant chocolate pudding into the indent of the cake. It only takes a few spoonfuls and don’t fill it too full, otherwise, it will ooze all over.
Carefully sprinkle your “potting soil” crushed cookies over the pudding. Make sure you cover it so it doesn’t look like you have shiny dirt. đŸ™‚
Now I’m sorry if this seems a little morbid but cut those worms in half if you want the back part to stick out too. They’re just too short if left whole.
Carefully push your worm halves into the pudding and move the “dirt” around to cover them nicely.
Add your flower and leaf.
When all is said and done, they look adorable and the kids love them! If you aren’t going to use them that same day, I would hold off on assembling them. The pudding could seep into the cake but it did take a couple days for that to happen and the sugar candy (leaf and flower) started melting with the condensation. Depending on how many you need, these don’t take long to assemble, just have everything prepped beforehand.
