If you follow this blog fairly closely, you may remember a book review I did for Unjunk Your Junk Food by Andrea Donsky and Lisa Tsakos from Naturally Savvy back in March. It was a fun and informative little book that I still reference here and there.
Recently, Andrea and Lisa have published another book (this time an eBook) called Label Lessons: Your Guide to a Healthy Shopping Cart. This eBook is only 31 pages so it’s a quick read. Once again, they offer some comparisons on the healthier choice but this time, it’s not just about food. They include a few products like supplements and personal care items.
When you go to the grocery store, do you stop to read the labels on the products you’re purchasing? No research is needed to realize that most of the products on the shelves contain ingredients of some sort that we have no clue what they really are. We’d have to do a word search to know what certain words on some labels actually mean.
Label Lessons covers the “Scary Seven” along with several other things that may not be as bad but should probably still be avoided if possible. I love the fact that they have color coded the “Scary Seven” as red, the “should probably avoid” as yellow and GMO’s as blue. When looking at their comparisons on the following pages, they use the red, yellow and blue colors to help you remember what category that ingredient falls under. Just another thing to make the book a bit easier to read.
I also love the fact that they compare products that I can usually find. It can be so frustrating looking for a product that is so unheard of and come to find out, no grocer in your area carries it. In Label Lessons, they compare products like Quaker Instant to Country Choice Organic. They even offer a couple recipes in the book to go along with the product they recommend.
Overall, this is a great companion to Unjunk Your Junk Food, or just by itself. You can download it for FREE and even print some coupons for some of the products mentioned (while supplies lasts). For every person who shares this eBook, Naturally Savvy will donate $1 (up to $10,000) to Holistic Moms Network. You will also be entered to win a $1000 shopping spree to a health food store of your choice!
