Have you ever pulled out that cookbook and searched for a recipe only to discover it has brown sugar in it? That being the one ingredient you forgot to pick up at the store on your last trip? Sure, you can use regular sugar but it’s just not quite the same as the brown sugar. I’ve been there more times than I can count. We now buy organic cane sugar by the 50 lb bag around here and honestly, sometimes I just don’t feel like picking up yet another sugar… to store in another jar… in my, at times, crowded cupboards. So I started making it. After all, we have bulk sugar and I keep molasses on hand, why add yet another ingredient to the list?
Making brown sugar is super easy and I just make it as I need it (which isn’t all that often so now it doesn’t go hard). You don’t need any special supplies to make brown sugar just a bowl, spoon or fork, molasses and sugar.

Take one cup of sugar and one tablespoon molasses.
Mix the two ingredients together until well mixed. I know it looks like it’s just going to be lumpy sugar but really, just keep mixing and it will even out. 🙂
And done! Brown sugar in just a matter of a few minutes. No need to run to the grocery store. You can now make that recipe with a packed amount of brown sugar. If you need dark brown sugar, add another tablespoon.
